This year's budget delivers more than $2 billion for key Coalition commitments in natural resource management and environmental initiatives across Australia.
Minister for the Environment, Greg Hunt, Minister for Agriculture, Barnaby Joyce, and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Agriculture, Richard Colbeck, said that in line with the Coalition’s election commitment, the National Landcare Programme will now be delivered in partnership with the Green Army and the Working on Country programmes.
The Government will invest more than $2 billion over four years to manage our natural resources through the National Landcare Programme, the Green Army, Reef 2050 Plan, Working on Country, the Land Sector Package and investments in the Great Barrier Reef Foundation.
Minister Hunt said the National Landcare Programme will consist of a national component and a regional component.
"The national component will deliver on key election commitments including the 20 Million Trees Programme, Coastal River Recovery Initiatives, Cumberland Conservation Corridor, Whale and Dolphin Protection Plan, Kimberley Cane Toad Clean Up and the Dandenong Ranges Wildlife Recovery," Minister Hunt said.
Minister Joyce said that the regional component will be delivered through 56 regional Natural Resource Management organisations across the country and will have a strong focus on community engagement in setting priorities and delivering projects.
"Reforms to the National Landcare Programme will put the Landcare community back at the centre of land management programmes that will encourage partnerships with Green Army and Working on Country projects," Minister Joyce said.
Senator Colbeck said local Landcare groups will be key beneficiaries of the overall increase in funding towards natural resource management initiatives.
Landcare groups will be able to sponsor Green Army projects to deliver meaningful environmental outcomes on public and private land throughout Australia.
"The Coalition has a long and proud history of supporting local communities’ land management efforts and the initiatives we have outlined continue this support," the Ministers said.
