Call to recognise Landcare leaders

26 May 2014

Minister for Agriculture Barnaby Joyce today called for nominations for the 2014 Bob Hawke Landcare Award.

"This preeminent award is presented every two years to recognise an individual who champions care of the land, adopts best practice techniques and inspires enthusiasm and knowledge in others," Minister Joyce said.

"Nominations open today and the award winner will be announced at the National Landcare Awards dinner on 18 September.

"This is a great opportunity to recognise custodians of our land – whether they are our farmers or other Landcare group members – for the important role they play in keeping land healthy so that its productive capacity can be safeguarded for future generations.

"The Coalition is a strong supporter of the Landcare movement and in March the Government demonstrated this commitment by providing Landcare Australia Limited with $4 million over four years to support, promote and celebrate Landcare right across Australia," Minister Joyce said today.

Minister Joyce also said the Australian Government's commitment to natural resource management added up to more than $2 billion over the next four years.

"Our $1 billion National Landcare Programme is a significant component of the Australian Government's investment of over $2 billion in natural resource management over four years.

"The 25th anniversary of the Landcare movement this year is a significant milestone and gives us all a great opportunity to reflect on the legacy Landcare has already delivered.

"It gives us the opportunity to build on that by consulting with the community about the best way to carry the programme forward."

The winner of the award will receive a prize package of up to $50,000 to further develop their knowledge and skills in sustainable land management and Landcare.
