Joyce concludes five day China visit with high level talks

19 September 2014

Minister Joyce said he was pleased with his discussions with senior Chinese leaders including Vice Premier Wang Yang, Minister for Agriculture Han Changfu, Minister for State Administration of Grain Ren Zhengxiao and Minister for General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine Zhi Shuping.

From visiting the regions to official meetings and the Third APEC Ministerial Meeting on Food Security – including a rather challenging participation with Mongolian folk dancing at the APEC welcome dinner – this visit has augured well for furthering our engagement with key Chinese Senior Government Ministers essential to the Free Trade Agreement between Australia and China.

Food security, increased trade and infrastructure are all seen as crucial in the coming decades for both the Asia-Pacific region and the globe.

Referring to Megan Clarke, Chief Executive of the CSIRO, Minister Joyce noted that the world will consume more food in the next 50 years than it has consumed over entire human history.

35 million tonnes of grain is lost each year from storage processes in China alone, which is one and a half times Australia’s annual wheat crop. Australia has a role to play not only in the export of food, but also the export of technology to deal with issues such as this.
