First round of small exporters package a success
9 December 2014
The first round of the Australian Government’s $15 million, four-year package to assist small exporters received over 600 successful applications for registration rebates across all sectors of the agricultural export industry.
Minister for Agriculture, Barnaby Joyce, said successful applicants from the meat, dairy, egg, fish, horticulture and grain industries would receive a rebate of 50 per cent on export registration charges up to a maximum of $5,000.
“The Package for Small Exporters was a key election commitment made by the Coalition and is specifically designed to support better returns at the farmgate by improving market access and reducing the regulatory burden for small exporters across the country,” Minister Joyce said.
“The Australian Government identified the agriculture sector as a pillar of the national economy from day one and has made trade a priority.
“Over the past year we have secured historic market access agreements with key trading partners such as China, Japan and Korea–with more work to come.
“This programme ensures that the economic opportunities delivered through these agreements extend to all businesses in the sector, large and small.”
Minister Joyce said that in addition to rebates for small exporters, the $15 million package would include a review of export fees and charges as well as grants for projects designed to directly benefit small exporters.
“In 2014-15, government and industry will work in partnership to review export costs and ensure that small exporters in particular are not facing regulatory burdens that undermine their profitability or the contribution they make to the national economy,” Minister Joyce said.
This initiative will also fund projects designed to help small exporters secure and improve overseas markets. Criteria and application details for project funding under the package will be released in the New Year.
“Delivering assistance to exporters is a significant step in an important programme designed to help Australian farmers improve their competitiveness and profitability in the international marketplace,” Minister Joyce said.
