Encouraging live export whistleblowers
13 April 2018
Minister for Agriculture David Littleproud today delivered the whistleblower hotline for the live export industry, a free call service on 1800 319 595.
Minister Littleproud said the hotline would enable people to confidentially report breaches or suspected breaches in the export industry, including livestock exports.
"There should be nothing to fear from transparency. Let's let the light shine in," Minister Littleproud said.
"I want to create a culture where whistleblowers are comfortable coming forward and confident their information will be treated confidentially and taken seriously.
"The whistleblower hotline is the first step.
"People can either identify themselves or make an anonymous disclosure."
The hotline number will be required to be displayed by exporters in the course of their activities.
Minister Littleproud has also announced a review of the independent regulator, the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources and a short, sharp review of the standards for the sheep trade during the Middle Eastern summer.
The Minister also intends to work with the Opposition to increase penalties for those doing the wrong thing which will build on reforms currently before the Parliament within the Export Control Bill 2017.
The Minister will continue to work on other ways to create an environment where whistleblowers feel comfortable coming forward.
