On Sustainable Seafood Day, lovers of Australian seafood can rest easy knowing that the locally-caught produce on their plate is sourced from the world's best managed fisheries.
The continuous improvements to fishing practices made by the fishing industry and the Australian Fisheries Management Authority are paying dividends.
"Australian fisheries are in the best shape they have been in for more than 20 years," Minister Ruston said.
"We live in an age where consumers really care about where their food is sourced.
"More and more consumers are seeking to make responsible seafood choices and there is growing public concern about overfishing, farming practices and their impact on our oceans and wildlife.
"Our fisheries practices are world class.
"You can be rest assured, however, that Australian fisheries will keep serving up sustainable seafood."
