Yarra Yering takes top gong in National Wine Show
Victoria’s Yarra Yering winery has been awarded the Prime Minister’s Trophy for Champion Wine of Show for their 2021 Underhill Shiraz at the National Wine Show.
The National Wine Show is Australia’s premier wine show and the Prime Minister’s Trophy for Champion Wine of Show is the highest accolade that can be awarded to any wine in the country.
Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Murray Watt, congratulated the winning wine makers and acknowledged the huge contribution the wine industry makes to the Australian economy through trade and tourism.
“I congratulate Sarah Crowe and the Yarra Yering team on their wonderful success and all the wine makers in the National Wine Show—to make it into the national show is a great achievement in itself,” Minister Watt said.
“Australian wines are the best in the world, the industry generates $45 billion to the economy and importantly provides jobs in our regions in wine production and tourism.
“The Albanese Government is supporting Australian wine by expanding and diversifying trade markets.
“The Australia-UK FTA entered into force on 31 May, removing all tariffs on Australian wine and under the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement, Australia now has greater access to the Indian market of 1.4 billion people—in one of the world’s fastest growing major economies.
A number of other awards for excellent Australian wines were presented at the show and one other special award in recognition of James Halliday AM.
“The industry owes much to James Halliday AM. I was very pleased to see James recognised for his contribution to the Australian wine industry over many decades. I look forward to reading many more of his reviews.”
In 2021-22 Australia had some 2,156 wineries and 146,244 hectares under vine.
In the past twelve months Australia exported 620 million litres to 118 export destinations, that is equivalent to equivalent to 828 million bottles and worth almost $2 billion in export earnings.
