Hass avocados from Western Australian have begun landing on dinner tables in Thailand, following the first successful delivery this week.
Two shipments – nearly 6 tonnes of avocados - have arrived in Thailand this week, after an agreement was signed between the two countries earlier this year to export avocados through a new market access deal.
Minister for Trade and Tourism, Don Farrell said this achievement was a culmination of the hard work by the Albanese Government to open doors for Australian exporters.
“This new market access opportunity for avocados is helping our world-class Aussie farmers and businesses,” Minister Farrell said.
“More trade is a key part of how we build a more prosperous Australia.”
Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Murray Watt said this was a significant win for Australian avocado growers, with an estimated market value of approximately $10 million per year.
“Australian avocado growers have wanted to export to Thailand for a number of years, and this signed agreement is a great step forward in our trading relationship,” Minister Watt said.
“There’s great consumer appetite for avocados in Thailand, and our reputation for delivering world-class, clean, and healthy produce is a big asset on the world stage.
“The avocado industry has recently experienced substantially lower prices on the domestic market due to high supply, so opening new market access and trade opportunities is helping the avocado industry maintain steady supply and pricing.”
Thailand was Australia’s 10th largest agriculture, fisheries and forestry export market by value in 2022-2023, worth $2.5 billion, including horticulture at $129.5 million.
The new market access supports the horticultural sector in meeting their target of becoming a $20 billion sector by 2030 and the broader agricultural industry to grow to be a $100 billion sector.
