Issued by Senator the Hon Murray Watt - former Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry

Media statement: Retirement of Secretary of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry

On the announcement of his retirement from the Australian Public Service, I wish to recognise the long and distinguished career of Andrew Metcalfe AO, the Secretary of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and Australia’s Director of Biosecurity.

Mr Metcalfe’s dedication to public service began with his employment as an Administrative Trainee in the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet in 1980.

Since 2005, Mr Metcalfe has served as Secretary of three departments for a total of 12 years. The respect in which he has been held is demonstrated by his ability to serve 15 different Ministers and Assistant Ministers, from both sides of politics.

In his various roles, Mr Metcalfe has demonstrated professionalism, deep respect and care for his staff and a willingness to provide Ministers with informed, practical advice.

On a personal level, I have enjoyed working with Mr Metcalfe and the benefit of his experience since becoming Minister a year ago. Our relationship has been one of strong collaboration and openness.

I have appreciated having Mr Metcalfe at my side as together we have tackled complex challenges including the most serious biosecurity threat Australia’s agriculture sector has faced in decades, longstanding workforce shortages, supporting the agriculture sector to thrive in a changing climate and increasing trade opportunities for Australian producers.

I have appreciated Mr Metcalfe’s depth of knowledge of the sector, his strong relationships with stakeholders and his ability to navigate wider government structures. I know he remains passionate about the future of our agriculture sector.

Mr Metcalfe leaves with my very best wishes. I hope that he and his family enjoy a long-planned and well-deserved holiday and I look forward to seeing his future contribution, in different capacities.

Mr Metcalfe’s retirement is effective Friday, 4 August. Secretary of the Prime Minister’s Department, Glyn Davis, will lead a process to identify his successor.
